GEOMETRICIAN'S VIEWS

Geometrician’s Views is an Erasmus+ partnership coordinated by the French association “Les Maths en Scène” (https://lesmathsenscene.fr/). Six partners (Croatia, Greece, Italy, Romania, Serbia, and Spain) are involved in the project. The main educative objective is to make students able to recognize mathematical patterns and concepts into artworks and natural phenomena. Researchers, artists, and teachers will work together in order to lead students towards the discovery of mathematics’ beauty in the world around them. Exhibitions and tutorials for teachers will be valuable outputs, that will easily reach the general public making mathematics more accessible and enjoyable.

Aims

Mathematics is sometimes associated with two other words: “difficulty” and “anxiety”. This project wants students to completely change their perception of mathematics. Students will have the opportunity to 1) learn and apply mathematical concepts looking first at artworks and natural phenomena, guided by experts; 2) directly experience the discovery of mathematical concepts through hands-on laboratories and exhibitions; 3) improve their collaborative skills by cooperating with peers belonging either to their own class either to other European countries; 4) practice English as a common language; 5) use software specifically designed for collaborative work; 6) meet deadlines and respect other’s work.

Work process

Classes involved in the Erasmus Plus project will work on different mathematical topics chosen among those available in the “Regard de Géomètre” (https://lesmathsenscene.fr/regards-de-geometre/) project, supported by the association “Les Maths en Scène” (https://lesmathsenscene.fr/). Classes working on the same topic will be linked in the TwinSpace, in order to exchange information, tutorials, and exhibitions’ products about a particular mathematical topic among the 60 available. October 2021: classes will be linked in the TwinSpace; November 2021: students will present their work planning; December 2021: teachers will upload tutorials for mathematical laboratories; January-February 2022: teachers will upload documentation about students activities; March 2022: teachers and students will meet online for discussions about mathematical experiences; April-May 2022: organizations of final exhibitions and documentation on the TwinSpace.

Expected results

This eTwinning project, linked to the Erasmus+ partnership “Geometrician’s Views”, will simplify the exchange of tutorials, exhibitions products, and dissemination of good practice. This project wants to become a landmark for people involved in mathematical education allowing students and teachers to produce common educational paths. At the end of the project, the TwinSpace will be a public repository of educational activities in recreational mathematics. The project will allow building local communities of teachers, students, researchers, and artists, strongly motivated to implement the dissemination of mathematical culture.

ACTIVITIES

OCTOBER

Presentations

Our 2ºA and 2ªC students make a presentation of our school and town.

Leonardome

Today (25.10.2021) we have dedicated the Math session to explore the world of freestanding domes. These wooden structures served as falsework for the construction of domes during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Different groups of students have enjoyed mathematics by building geometric patterns.

NOVEMBER

Regular polyhedron

Construction of the five regular polyhedra using nets: Tetrahedron, Cube, Octahedron, Dodecahedron and Icosahedron.

Tangram

"A legend says that a servant of a Chinese emperor was carrying a ceramic mosaic, very expensive and fragile, and tripped, breaking it to pieces. Desperate,  He tried to re-form the mosaic in a square shape but could not, however, he realized that he could form many other figures with the pieces."

Our 2nd year students have made a cardboard tangran and have enjoyed the construction of their geometric figures:

JANUARY

Mathematical Photography Workshop with GeoGebra

Students recognize mathematical patterns and concepts everywhere, take photos and model them with GeoGebra application.

Watching the film Hidden Figures to work on the ralationship between geometric patters and films.

Students recognize mathematical patterns and concepts into artworks, natural phenomena and movies. Also we use this film to introduce a new topic: Functions.
