THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING A SCIENTIST

WhatsApp Image 2021-01-14 at 14.28.05.jp

About the project

“We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology.” Carl Sangan

The feeling of uncertainty about the future, determined by recent events concerning both climatic variations and the pandemic Sars-CoV2 virus, has also exacerbated the scientific disinformation, producing alarmism, fake news, conspiracy or denial theses.

Furthermore, the ordinary citizen struggles to understand how it is not possible for science to give immediate answers to new problems or to quickly apply technological solutions deriving from scientific research.

We therefore propose a project that will bring the figure of the scientist to light, as a researcher both history and presently contributing to current events.

The project is aimed at humanizing scientists and experimenting firsthand with the scientific method and related concepts such as reliability, data analysis, evaluation and rejection/affirmation of hypothesis.

Aims

- Promote self-awareness in children, the awareness of being “others” with respect to different cultures and situations, the importance of communication and the spirit of solidarity, sharing their history and customs.
- Develop an ethic of responsibility, which is realized in the duty to choose and act in an informed way.
-Improve one's scientific cultural capital in order to be able to respond to the requests of politics that asks us to express our opinion on matters concerning science in first person.
-Use the English language as a tool to understand and communicate.
-Collaborate among peers
-Promote a conscious and responsible use of IT tools, in particular social networks, as positive sharing tools.
-Promote a scientific culture that is able to give answers to questions and doubts that are of great relevance in this period, develop a critical spirit in students.
-Apply knowledge from various disciplines for solving reality tasks
-Share teaching methodologies in Science.

Work process

October: presentation by each partner of their school and class via videoconference and web2.0 tools
November: Drafting of a questionnaire to evaluate scientific knowledge inside and outside your institution; collection and processing of data
December: each involved pupil creates their own logo/poster with a design inspired by the title of the project. The drawings will then be published on Twinspace and on Instagram and the most voted one will be used as logo for the project.
January: Each group carries out a brief historical research on a scientist from their country. The research will then be published in a common e-book worked on by students.
February-: join a European Citizen Science project. Work on scientific fake news and scientifically incorrect political messages through.
March interview with a researcher from his/her country with questions drafted by students
April: small exhibition of experiments inspired by the research about the studied scientists
May: Final Prize Quiz

Expected results

-Craft of creative anti-covid19 masks inspired by the concept of the project
-Develop and create a project centered e-book about intervieving scientists and researchers
-Collect process and outcomes of the experiment exhibition through web 2.0 tools
-Collect process and outcomes of interviews to scientists through web 2.0 tools
-Develop a critical spirit in students that allows them to know how to move in the "mare magnum" of the web
-Improve the scientific approach to the knowledge of nature
-Improve the use of English in everyday life
-Improve ICT knowledge

what is science for you?

virtual meetings

26th November: Italy - Spain.

IES Carolina Coronado (Spain) participated in a videoconference to meet our partners from Italy. We introduced ourselves and we spoke about different topics with them. It was very funny.
